This is an antique original Hubley Terrier paperweight. One of Hubley's
most popular cast iron lines was their line of cast iron dogs. This
line of cast iron dogs was manufactured from approximately 1910 through
the 1940s. The Hubley cast iron dogs are one of the most popular
antique collectibles today. Hubley, of Lancaster, PA., manufactured
solid cast iron paperweights, door stops and many other cast iron toys.
This paperweight, he or she, is in a standing pose with the head turned
and is beautifully hand painted with original paint without any
repaints or touch ups whatsoever. The paint on this paper weight is
exceptional with very little loss considering that it is 75 to 100
years old.
This little guy is heavy for his or her size weighing in at 9.4 ounces
or 266.45 grams. It stands 3” tall by 3 1/4” long
by 1 5/8” wide. It is indeed cast iron as a magnet does stick
to it. The markings are black spots with soft brown highlights on an
off white or cream body.
This is a spectacular piece with artistic design and we consider it to
be in investment quality condition.
We researched this terrier quite extensively and after looking at pages
upon pages of all kinds of terriers this one appears a lot like an
Airedale Terrier, a Welch Terrier, a Landlake Terrier, a Fox Terrier or
a Wirehaired Terrier and in our opinion he or she most closely
resembles the Wirehaired or Fox Terrier.
You will be pleased with this paperweight and it will make a nice
addition to your collection or as a gift to someone else's collection.
