Additional Information:
This is a glass advertising thermometer for Dame Stoddard & Co.
from Boston, Massachusetts. It was made by the Tycos Company of
Rochester, N.Y. in the early part of the 1900s. Tycos was most famous
for their medical thermometers and later their blood pressure meters.
They were considered one of the most accurate at the time.
This thermometer measures 7 7/8" tall by 2" wide by 1/2" thick. It is
in perfect working order and cosmetically it is excellent with no chips
or cracks. We believe the thermometer is filled with mercury which was
common in older thermometers.
Warren S. Dame, O. H. P. Stoddard, and Ralph M. Kendall bought Bradford
and Anthony in 1881 and became Dame, Stoddard & Kendall.
Shortly
after the turn of the century they became Dame Stoddard & Co.
Dame Stoddard & Co is most famous for not only their fishing
tackle
and supplies but also for their cutlery. They had a number of different
items that they used as advertising media.
This glass thermometer is one of them and is in excellent working
condition. It really is amazing that it has survived this long
especially since it is glass and not plastic.
This is a perfect piece for a gift for that fisherman in your family.
Dame Stoddard was known for its quality so any angler would be proud to
own this piece of history.
