Additional Information:
Sir Walter Scott originally wrote this influential poem, in 1810,
drawing on the romance of the legend, with the setting in Loch Katrine
in the Trossachs of Scotland. His material was the subject matter for
an opera by Gioachino Rossini, which debuted in Naples in 1819.
The Lady of the Lake
has
been connected to many character roles including King Arthur receiving
his sword Excalibur, the enchanting of Merlin, and raising Sir Lancelot
after the death of his father.
This book was published by the H. M. Caldwell Company of New York and
Boston and although it says it is the 1830 edition we believe it is
circa 1903. The H.M. Caldwell Co., was in business from 1896 to
1914. Herbert M. Caldwell was a trade book salesman. There is no
copyright date listed in the book but the Rosemary Series was published
in Leather circa 1903 to 1906. This book is number 27 in the series.
This book is still in the original box and tissue as issued. The book
has full limp leather covers. The front cover has Lady of the Lake
in gold and a raised leather portrait of a girl. There is a brown silk
ribbon bookmark attached. It has marbled end sheets. It measures
approximately 4 1/2” wide by 6 1/2” tall by
3/4”
thick. It has 253 pages with gilt top to the pages.
There is an owner presentation inscription on the front flyleaf dated
Christmas 1906. The book has a few photogravures with one in the very
front of Sir Walter Scott. The book is in excellent condition with no
rips, tears or writing other than the afore mentioned inscription. The
limp leather is naturally bent at the edges and the original box is in
good condition with a few tape repairs.
The Contents include the Introduction and the Lady of the Lake a
poem in six cantos. They are:
- The
Chase
- The
Island
- The
