Gilbert and Sullivan were from the Victorian era. They formed a
partnership of librettist Sir William Schwenck Gilbert, better know as
W. S. Gilbert, (1836-1911) and composer Sir Arthur Seymour
Sullivan, better known as just Arthur Sullivan, (1842-1900).
The two men collaborated on fourteen comic operas between 1871 and 1896
and while they were written in the 1800s they are still very popular
and presented even today.
